Types of Assessment

Diagnostic Assessment

  • May be administered at the beginning of a term or unit of study or when learning difficulties are evident.
  • Is used to assess the skills, abilities and current level of student achievement
  • Identifies learning difficulties that may lead to program modifications.
  • Is used at E.Y.C.I. to identify reading and math skill strengths and gaps in learning.

Formative Evaluation

  • Measures each learner�s daily progress and forms a significant part of the final mark.
  • Influences the instructional methods and pace used in the course.

Summative Evaluation

  • Occurs at the end of a unit, semester, term, course
  • Provides learners with the opportunity to synthesize, demonstrate and apply the knowledge skills and processes in the course.
  • Represents 30% of the final mark. (determined by MET policy)

Evaluation Strategies

  • Teacher observation of daily classroom performance.
  • Peer evaluation.
  • Self-evaluation.
  • Independent and/or group research projects.
  • Oral presentations.
  • Written unit tests, quizzes, critiques.
  • Class and homework assignments.
  • Student-teacher conferences.
  • Demonstration assignments.

Final Evaluation Strategies

  • Major cumulative project.
  • Written examination.
  • Oral or demonstration examination.

Course Assessment and Evaluation Procedures

At the beginning of the school year each teacher will provide students with a clear outline of assessment and evaluation strategies and expectations for each course based on Ministry of Education policy, School Evaluation Policy and specify curriculum requirements.
