Environment Club
We meet weekly to discuss all issues affecting our earth, and more importantly our community. During these meetings, we assess what we can do as a group and individually to help fight serious issues plaguing today’s environment. We believe in the collective power of team work and emphasis this in a variety of community based activities, such as student awareness campaigns, fundraising drives, recycling and energy conservation programs.
We meet Tuesdays during lunch in room 148. The club is always open to newcomers with an interest in conserving our environment and working as team to achieve common goals for the betterment of our school. If this sounds like you, drop by and join us for a meeting!
EYCI COMPOST BIN
Help the Environment Club reduce the quantity of waste in our cafeteria with our new vermicomposting program!
Vermicomposting is a natural process by which organic material decomposes into a dark nutrient-rich soil called humus with the help of earthworms, such as red wigglers. Worms help speed up the process of decomposition and help produce richer compost, ideal for fertilizing.
Benefits of composting:
· keep valuable resources out of the landfill
· feeling good at recycling nutrients that don't need to be wasted
· easy way to produce natural fertilizer for plants
What is acceptable in a compost bin?
· coffee grounds/filters
· tea leaves/bags
· fruit/vegetable peelings
· bread, rice and pasta
· soiled paper towels and napkins
* NO dairy, meat, oils or junk food, please!
Look for us MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS in the cafeteria and on the first floor halls during lunch for composting!
RECYCLING
EYCI have recieved a large shipment of hallway bins to maximize the convenience of recycling. They are available in all parts of the school; many of them are situated near garbage cans. Please, check the sheet attached for acceptable items and help keep recyclables from ending up in landfills.
Pop Tab Collection
EYCI will be starting the pop tab collection during Earth Week, April 17 2010 to April 25 2010. It is advised that people collect pop tabs now.
